What is a pivot point calculator?

A pivot point calculator turns yesterday's High, Low, Close and Open into a set of reference levels for today's session: one central pivot, plus resistance levels above it and support levels below, the exact count depending on the method. Intraday and F&O traders on the NSE and BSE use these levels to plan entries, exits and stop-losses before the first candle even forms.

Unlike indicators that plot as price moves, pivot levels are fixed for the entire session once calculated, giving you a static map to trade against rather than a line that keeps redrawing itself.

How the levels are calculated

Every method starts from the same previous-session High, Low and Close (DeMark's also uses Open), then applies its own weighting to find the pivot.

Reading pivot levels like a trader

Bias for the day

Price opening and holding above the pivot points to a bullish session; holding below points to bearish. It's the fastest bias check before the first five-minute candle closes.

Zones, not walls

Support and resistance levels aren't hard reversal points, treat them as zones where price is more likely to pause, reverse, or accelerate through on volume.

Stop-loss placement

A stop placed just beyond the nearest pivot level ties your risk to a level the whole market is watching, instead of an arbitrary point value.

Breakout confirmation

A strong close beyond R1 or S1 on volume often signals continuation toward the next level; a weak push that stalls at the level often reverses.

Pivot point methods

Five ways to weight the same inputs, each with its own level count and suited to a different trading style.

Classic

P = (High + Low + Close) / 3. Three resistance and three support levels (R1–R3, S1–S3), the default reference most traders check first.

Fibonacci

Same pivot as Classic. R1–R4 and S1–S4 sit at 38.2%, 61.8%, 100% and 161.8% of the session range from the pivot, wider, more dynamic zones.

Camarilla

R1–R4 and S1–S4 are built directly off the Close, clustered tightly around it. No separate pivot. Popular with scalpers and range traders.

Woodie's

P = (High + Low + 2 × Close) / 4. Weights the close double and gives two levels each side (R1–R2, S1–S2), reacting faster to the session's momentum.

DeMark's

Direction-dependent: compares Open to Close to pick the formula, giving a single resistance and support level (R1, S1).

Central Pivot Range

Reading the CPR

The CPR sits alongside the Classic pivot: Bottom Central (BC) and Top Central (TC) mark a band around it, mirrored off the session's High-Low midpoint.

A CPR narrower than roughly 15% of the session range can precede a more directional session, while a wider CPR suggests a more balanced one, price ranging rather than trending. Neither reading is a standalone signal; confirm with price action and volume before acting on it.

Frequently asked questions

Pivot points are a technical reference derived from historical price and do not guarantee future price behaviour. Use them alongside your own risk management, not as a substitute for it.

Which pivot point method should I use?

Classic is a common baseline with three resistance and three support levels. Fibonacci spaces its four levels each side by retracement ratios (38.2%, 61.8%, 100%, 161.8%). Camarilla packs four closer intraday bands around the close, popular with scalpers. Woodie's weights the close and gives two levels each side. DeMark's adapts to the open-close relationship and gives a single resistance and support level.

Which session's prices should I enter?

Use the completed previous trading session's High, Low, Close and Open to calculate levels for the next session, for NIFTY, Bank Nifty, or any NSE/BSE-listed instrument.

Why does the calculator ask for Open as well as High, Low and Close?

Open is used by the DeMark's method, which compares the session's Open to its Close to decide which formula to apply. It's also used to sanity-check your inputs: Open and Close should both fall within the High-Low range.

What is the Central Pivot Range (CPR)?

CPR is the zone between the Bottom Central (BC) and Top Central (TC) pivots, straddling the Classic pivot. A narrow CPR (relative to the session range) can precede a more directional session; a wider CPR suggests a more balanced one. Neither is a standalone signal.

Why do some methods show fewer levels than others?

Each method defines a different number of levels by design. Classic gives three resistance and three support levels, Woodie's gives two each side, Camarilla and Fibonacci give four each side, and DeMark's gives one resistance and one support level. Camarilla also has no separate pivot of its own, since it's built directly off the close.

Do pivot levels guarantee reversals?

No. They are widely observed reference zones, but price can cross them without reacting. Combine them with trend, volume, volatility and live price confirmation, and keep your own risk controls in place.
